Bug-Out Stove
3 Attachment(s)
I just picked up this little gasoline stove at a local hardware store.
I wanted something that would burn readily available unleaded gas, even in a SHTF scenario I could find a couple quarts of gas in an abandoned car or lawnmower. The Coleman 533 has a larger tank (fount) than the smaller Peak 1 series of backpacking stoves and is much more stable for larger pots and pans. Plus a longer run time. Basically its a Peak 1 model 440 burner with a larger tank so the generators from those stoves will fit the 533, any standard pump repair kit for the lanterns will also work for spare 533 parts if needed. Flame control is excellent with low simmer and a 10,000 btu high output for snow melting and heating larger pot of water. The little stove is super simple to light and use. I would recommend disassembling and cleaning the generator with carb cleaner once a season. |

(Millions of others won't have a stove ... )
Under $50. I got an extra generator coming from Ebay, cost 14.99 plus shipping. BTW, it comes with a special filter funnel, its best to use if burning unleaded gas. I was looking at those bigger suitcase two burner rigs but its way too bulky for my B.O.B. |
Re: Bug-Out Stove
where did you find it for $50? which part number is the 'generator'?

Local ACE Hardware store. That brass tube that crosses the burner is the generator, #3. I heard that Coleman is phasing out the gasoline stoves and lanterns and flooding the big box stores like Wallmart with the propane rigs, so I decided to get a liquid fuel stove before the price becomes unreasonable. I price checked it against other gasoline stoves like MRS and SVEA stoves, they are twice the price and not as easy to use. Spare parts for the more exotic stoves are hard to come by. The 533 is not the most sophisticated stove on the market but its a reliable and stable cooking surface. |
Re: Bug-Out Stove
If you plan on using it for non-SHTF stuff (camping, for example), you might consider using just Coleman fuel. Yes, they can burn unleaded gasoline.
For a while. I have one of these, and the generator plugged up after burning just a small amount of unleaded gas. I tried soaking the generator tube in solvent, blowing it out,...no luck. I bought a spare generator but haven't installed it yet. Coleman themselves will tell you that the generators will puke faster if you burn gasoline versus Coleman fuel (or Walmart equivalent). |
Re: Bug-Out Stove
What he said. White gas is obscenely expensive, but the upside is that, since it doesn't have all the additives and junk that gasoline has, not only will it not clog the stove parts, but it will store damn near forever.

Re: Bug-Out Stove
I used an earlier model Coleman for over 20 years and found it really reliable and efficient. Great stoves. I have now retired it from regular use and am currently using a Primus Optifuel; way more expensive but will run on a whole range of fuels from propane to diesel and is smaller lighter and more efficient. However the Coleman is still an excellent choice.
